How to Know What You Want From a Relationship

Before you can find it, you have to define it. A framework for understanding your own intentions honestly.

How to Know What You Want From a Relationship

Most dating frustration comes from a mismatch nobody named: two people who never asked themselves what they actually wanted. Here is a framework for answering honestly — for yourself, before you answer anyone else.

Three questions that cut through

1. What do I want now, not eventually? Not your five-year plan — your current season. Someone rebuilding after a divorce and someone freshly out of school can both be wonderful partners for entirely different things. Name your season.

2. What am I actually offering? Honest self-assessment is a gift to everyone. If you travel constantly for work, a partner wanting daily togetherness will hurt — and that is information you should share.

3. What are my non-negotiables vs. my preferences? Non-negotiables are few and deep: children or not, core values, life direction. Preferences are many and shallow: height, hobbies, taste in music. Pain comes from treating preferences as non-negotiables and vice versa.

The honesty you owe yourself

Be suspicious of goals you inherited. "I want marriage by 30" — is that yours, or your family's timeline? "I never want anything serious" — is that truth, or armor from a past hurt? Neither answer is wrong; pretending is the problem.

Then say it, plainly

On Fikrago Love, your intention — serious relationship, long-term, dating to see, friends, marriage, still figuring it out — directly shapes your matches. Saying it honestly filters out the mismatches and the heartbreaks. The right people will not be scared off by your honesty. They will be relieved by it.

What if I don't know what I want?

That is a valid answer. Say 'still figuring it out' honestly — clarity about your clarity is itself clarity.
